Maternity tests

A maternity test is a DNA test that determines whether a woman is the biological mother of another person.
As in the case of a paternity test, the child’s DNA pattern is compared to that of the alleged mother to determine the likelihood that the child has inherited her DNA. After the test is conducted, it can be determined whether or not there is a mother-child relationship between the individuals involved in the test.
The most common cases in which a
maternity test is usually requested include:

  • Confirmation of an adopted child’s biological mother
  • Identification of missing persons
  • Proving kinship to Civil Registries for the purpose of reunifying
    immigrant families
  • Verification that an embryo conceived through in-
vitro fertilisation was implanted into the correct mother’s womb
  • Resolving situations where the mother or
hospital staff suspect that there has been a mix-up of babies in the baby unit
